What is a top-level domain?

.com, .org, .net or .uk are all examples of a top-level domain (TLD)

There are two types of TLD's. Below we explain the two different types:

  • Generic top-level domains (gTLD): These are TLDs that have no connection with a country. For examples, .com, .org, .net or .edu amongst others are all examples or Generic top-level domains (gTLD). Regulations and polices for these domains managed by ICANN.
  • Country-code top-level domains (ccTLD): These are TLDs that are associated with a particular country or location. For example, .uk, .nl, .gh etc. Country-code top-level domains (ccTLD) always consists out of two letters

In addition to the Generic top-level domains (gTLD) and Country-code top-level domains (ccTLD). There are also:

  • New gTLD's such as .photos, .management or .studio and many more.
  • Second Level (TLDs) such as .co.jp, .co.uk, .org.uk, com.ar, .gov.uk etc.
