What is ICANN?

ICANN ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is an organisation that manages and set policies for all policies for top-level domains and DNS (Domain Name System).

ICANN is responsible for managing and coordinating the Domain Name System (DNS) and the unique assignment of:

  • Internet domain names
  • Numerical IP Addresses
  • Protocol Port Identifier Assignments
  • DNS Root Server Systems

Here are some few rules set by ICANN for all registrar to comply, for example:

  • Require customers to agree with their terms when it comes to domain registration and domain transfer.
  • Make registrant's information public and make sure it stays up to date.
  • Timely reminder of domain when registrants domain is about to expire.
